Bridges: Fractions and Decimals

In Bridges we have been working on Fraction and Decimal equivalencies. We have also been thinking about decimals on a number line and rounding decimal numbers to the nearest whole number, tenth and hundredth.

Students are encouraged to think about fractions as division problems in order to help them translate fractions into decimals. For example 1 divided by 8 = 0.125. so 1/8=0.125.

Here are some games to continue practicing ordering and rounding decimals:
Town Creator - Rounding
Decimal Sharks - Rounding
Decimal Art - Ordering
Decimal Jeopardy - All Topics

Writing Opportunities

Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders can get ready to write!  At Randall we sponsor three opportunities for writers and poets to share their best works with a wider audience.  All entries can be turned in to Ms. Ishikawa (through teachers or the office).  Students can submit writing done in class or at home, as long as it meets the requirements of the contest.  Some of the contests offer prizes, and all work will be published in a Randall Anthology!
  • Here are links to parent information about this year's writing contests for Grades 3-5 in EnglishArabicHmong, and Spanish.
  • Here are the rules and entry form for the Nettesheim contest for 3rd through 5th-grade kids (picture book).
  • Here is the flyer with links to information for the Yahara contest for 5th-grade kids (poetry, essay, cartoon, or story).

Bridges: Workplaces, Decimals

Here are the directions and workplace pages for the last three workplaces we have introduced in class. If you have a deck of cards at home (take out face cards and 10s), you could play Target One or Draw and Compare Decimals. Ask your children how to play, they should know.

Here are some examples of the Problem Strings we have been doing in class around adding and subtracting decimals.

Vision Screening

VISION SCREENING
All 3rd & 5th graders at Randall will receive a routine vision screening at school on Monday, Nov. 12
If your child normally wears glasses, they should definitely wear them this day.

Nurse Lovell and volunteers from the UW School of Nursing will conduct the screenings.  If any
child does not pass, he/she will be retested in a few weeks (to make sure the results were valid) - -
if that child still does not pass, then Nurse Lovell will send home a letter with the results and
recommendations.  So, if you do not hear from the Health Office by the end of December, that
means your 3rd or 5th grader passed their screening.

Cindy, “Nurse Lovell” (204-2301 or 204-3305)

¡Gracias!

Science: Variables

We finished up our Variables Unit with a chart of our outcomes, a review of the terms and ideas we covered, and a physical graph showing our data and outcomes for the changed variable of length.
