Class Acts and Movin' On/Concert

Dear Randall Fifth Grade Families,
We will stream the Randall 5th grade class acts (8:30) and the 5th Grade Movin' On
Celebration and Concert (1:00)on Wednesday, June 12 so that families who are not able to attend can view
the events.  Both events will be streamed on the Randall Elementary School Facebook site.
Because there is not enough space in the cafeteria for all families to watch the class acts,
we will stream the performance from the library. Families who have a student in the
current act will be able to watch  in the cafeteria and when their student is not
performing, they can watch the live stream in the Randall library (or from home or work).
Families are invited to the 5th grade Movin' On Celebration and Concert at 1:00 in
the Randall gym, but the event will also be streamed and available for viewing in the
library (or from home or work).
Both streams will be on the Randall Elementary School Facebook page through the
end of the day on Thursday, June 13, and will then be deleted.
Please let us know if you have any questions.

Challenge Projects

What a great time we had trudging along Hacker's Trail. So many ups and downs, illnesses, deaths, but also triumph. Ask your child about how they did along the trail, what were some of the challenges they faced, and did they survive. And please check in on them to make sure their museum project is well underway, and ready to be handed in on Friday.

Check out a few snapshots of some of our challenge projects that came in. Thanks to so many parents and siblings for helping our students go above and beyond to help them.

Dear Families,

You are invited to attend our Westward Expansion presentations on Thursday, May 23rd, at 1:30  p.m.
in the Randall cafeteria. We hope you will be able to attend!

These presentations will be based on the research and writing that students have done in school,
but the presentation will need to be done at home. There are many many choices for how students
can present, it is very open ended to allow students to use their own talents and preferences when
deciding how to present. The requirement is that the student presents their information in a visually
appealing way. Here are some things that students could do, but these are only possibilities, students
can come up with other great ideas.

If your child doesn’t know what one of those formats is, don’t chose that one!  The presentation
needs to be relevant to the topic. If your student studied clothing, for example, their visual
presentation should be on clothing. If your student studied Lewis and Clark, their visual should
be about Lewis and Clark. At school the students are preparing all the research they should need
in their paper, they simply need to transfer it to another format for presentation purposes. Students
should also be prepared to convey this information to people observing their presentation. They
should be able to clearly verbalize and share what they know and have learned!  We’ve talked
with the students about the value of making the presentation interactive.  While this is not a
requirement, it engages the audience and is a way students can go beyond expectations.

We are requesting that all visuals be brought to school on Friday, May 17th, so that we can
make sure we are organized and ready to present!

Thank you for your support,

Mrs. Shorette,  Mrs. Godfrey and Ms. Hoven

Pioneer Project has begun!!

The PIONEER PROJECT has begun!  This is going to be a month long unit that simulates the westward expansion of the US via the wagon train experience. This week students found out about the project, saw their wagon train members, and chose their pioneer identities.  Ask your child who he/she is, how many children they have and more information they discovered about their character today.  This week will also include learning more about Manifest Destiny (the 19th-century doctrine or belief that the expansion of the US throughout the American continents was both justified and inevitable), travel by wagon, and pioneer life.

Throughout the project students will apply this new knowledge by making supply lists, writing diary entries and making trail decisions. This project will include much writing, much luck and chance (just like on the actual trails west in the mid 1800s), and other projects students will complete both at school and at home. The points they earn doing this work will allow their wagon train to move along the trail, hopefully arriving safely in Hacker's Valley in the end. Keep an eye out here on the blog for more information.

Talent Show Tryouts this Friday!

Stanzas and Metaphors

In the last few weeks we have been looking at how stanzas come together and contribute to the overall structure of a poem. We used the poem "An Ocean of Memories" as the basis for this work. We read the poem, analyzed the stanzas and discussed how each stanza contributed to the overall metaphor of the author's family being an ocean.

Then we applied our knowledge of stanzas and metaphors to write our own family metaphor poems. These are currently displayed on our lockers!
